While the French were no where near to being the first to mass produce clocks, they did indeed build their clock manufacturing reputation (specifically with the mantle type clock styles) based on the development of their very small, and highly accurate movements. In fact, the movements were so good for their time that they were exported in great numbers to countries like Britain, where they were heavily utilized by the UK manufacturers.

Apart from the high quality movements, french clocks are renowned for their detailed and very ornate designs.

However, it is the "carriage clock" that the French are best known for. To this day, some of these are still amongst the most complicated designs ever created.
