While the Germans have been manufacturing a variety of different clocks since the late 17th century (including mantle designs, wall designs, and grandfather clocks), it is without doubt the much loved cuckoo clock for which they are best known. It is a fact that the Black Forest region of Germany is where these clocks first originated from, however it is only estimated that they may have started around the mid 18th century (circa. 1750).
What makes these particular timepieces so intriguing, and the design so interesting, is the use of air "bellows" to mimic the sound of the cuckoo. The very early models even used wood for all of the internal gears, and were all pendulum driven with weights.
The ornate and detailed hand carved designs (like in the example to the left) are what make these magnificent time pieces so sought after to this day.
